Ephesians 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

It’s easy to lie, let’s be sincere to ourselves. Especially, when we want to desperately save our faces. The plain fact is that we don’t like to be embarrassed by a fact, situation or occurrence and what we are most likely to do in that instance is to lie.

But the truth is this, while lying could temporarily cover up the shame, it exposes us to the possibility of seeing nothing wrong with it and thus negatively affecting our character.

It is amazing that there are believers that have the mindset that they can’t do without lying. They tend to flow with the belief that there are “white lies”. But let’s be sincere to ourselves, a lie is a lie, there is no need to rationalize or justify what is not justifiable in the sight of God.

You see, we must be deliberate and intentional about the practice of putting away lying. Note that Paul did not say “put away lying” rather he said “putting away” which suggests that we must make it a constant practice.

I have discovered that one of the major threat to building good and lasting relationships is lying or insincere communication. Many would rather continue in deceiving themselves in a false relationship until the whole falsehood explodes and the relationship breaks down irredeemably.

However as believers in Christ, who is the Truth, we are to speak every man truth with his neighbor; brethren in church, colleagues at work, classmates, those living in the same residence or community with us etc.

I always tell my children, do only what you will not be ashamed of saying the truth about. And if you have done what is wrong, don’t be ashamed to face the consequence; don’t try to lie to cover up because you are afraid of the consequence of your actions.

You know how foolish it is to be lying to oneself. Although some do it, we all know that it is a very unreasonable thing to do. That is why the Bible encourages us to see others as ourselves and because we don’t think it okay to lie to oneself, we should not lie to our neighbors since we are members of one another.

When you are given to saying the truth, you might suffer some shame for your choice but over time, you will earn respect and honor among people.

Staying true to your conscience at all times by putting away lying might not be that easy through your own efforts but by the grace of God, it is practicable and doable.

God bless you as you take heed to the truth of the word of God.
